Omar, a young British man of Pakistani origin, takes over a laundrette in South London with a former schoolmate. The film explores racial and social tensions in Thatcher-era England.

Omar, a young British man of Pakistani origin, takes over a run-down laundrette in South London with help from his uncle and Johnny, a former schoolmate involved with a far-right gang. An unexpected romantic relationship develops between the two young men, forcing Johnny to question his environment and beliefs. Stephen Frears’ first international success, this sharp film subtly addresses racial tensions, homosexuality, and social divides in Thatcher’s England.
