BELLE DE JOUR X POOR THINGS

In this new dreamlike and disturbing experiment by Swiss artist Thomas Imbach, a young woman attempts to raise a large sum of money to save her father, at the expense of her honor.

Thomas Imbach, one of Switzerland's most daring filmmakers based in Zurich, returns with a highly inventive surrealist work. The film follows the literary form of Arthur Schnitzler's short story, from which it is adapted, namely that of a relentless inner monologue exploring the protagonist's thoughts. Lili, a young bourgeois girl spending her summer vacation at her aunt's invitation at a Grand Hotel in the Alps, receives an alarming letter from her mother: she must ask her uncle Dorsday for a large sum of money, otherwise her father will end up in prison. Lili soon realizes the hypocrisy of bourgeois society, which has little regard for women, and must put her dignity on the line. Shot on 16mm film and entirely in a studio, La Mise à nu is a Swiss example of a new form of virtual production, which opens up new narrative and ecological possibilities.
